River Otter: clayboard painting
River otter: Original ink painting on clayboard
14 x 11 inches
Ampersand Museum Series Clayboard: 1/8″ hardboard with a kaolin clay ground surface similar to the clay gesso grounds used during the Renaissance. The white surface is sanded to an extremely smooth, absorbent finish.
I begin by thinly applying paint or ink with mop brushes then work into it with scalpel knives and steel wool adding and shifting the image around. It is a very organic way of drawing that I have completely fallen in love with. I have used it to illustrate articles in Elementum Journal and for the interiors of Lauren St John’s ‘The Snow Angel’.
This otter image was created at a demonstration at Dillington House in Somerset for the Somerset Primary Network. I have worked it further and tried to keep the speed and spontaneity of the drawing I did on the day.
