The hawthorn is in flower, the buttercups are out, and the barn owl moves through the May afternoon. This is a gentler image than the dark threshold paintings — softer, more luminous, the magic here belonging to a bucolic world of blossom and long grass and the owl as a creature of wonder rather than menace.
Inspired by a sighting late one afternoon above the cliff tops on the Lizard in Cornwall — the owl appearing suddenly out of the light, silver against the hawthorn, and then gone.
