Five magpies in the Ash tree: a gathering, a fortune. Where one brings sorrow, and two bring joy, five bring silver — a brightness in the branches, a shimmer of good luck held in the bare winter tree. The magpies are restless and iridescent, their black and white plumage catching the cold light, the ash holding them in its dark lacework against the sky.

The original painting is acrylic on canvas with silver leaf, the metal leaf lending its own quiet gleam to the silver of the rhyme.
