Ask the wild bee
about the dance upon the petal.
Ask the wild bee
how the constellations rise
from the flowers of the mountain.
Ask the wild bee
where to find the amber necklace
and the golden circle.
Ask the wild bee
about the roots beneath the earth
and the solitary heart.
Ask the wild bee
What the Wise Ones knew.
This photograph grew out of the research for Catherine Hyde's illustrated book The Bee and the Sun. Working with a macro lens for the first time, the familiar became extraordinary — the bee at close range a creature of almost alien beauty, the garden suddenly a different world entirely.
There is something ancient and quietly extraordinary about the bee at work, the whole sweetness of the season concentrated in a single moment.
Photographed in Catherine Hyde's garden in Helston, Cornwall.
