Yeats wrote of the golden apples of the sun, and here they are — heavy on the bough, burnished and beginning to fall. The blackbird knows this abundance well; it is a bird of the earth, of leaf mould and rich soil, of the sweet rot that follows ripeness. This is a painting about the beauty of decay, the way autumn gives everything before letting go.
The original painting is acrylic on canvas with copper leaf, the gold of the fruit glowing with a warmth that shifts in different lights.
