TWILIGHT'S TRAILING EDGE print

Alice Oswald’s poem Slowed Down Blackbird catches the bird at the edge of evening — its song stretched and deepened, the twilight thickening around it, time itself seeming to slow. This painting lives in that same suspended moment: the blackbird at winter’s trailing edge, singing into the last of the light, its song already carrying something of spring in it, a promise made before the season has turned.

The blackbird is the great herald. It sings through the coldest months, and those who know how to listen can hear in its winter song the first intimation of what is coming — the lengthening days, the returning warmth, the world beginning, very quietly, to stir.
