Pronounced chuff, the chough has long been known as the Crow of Cornwall and features on the Cornish coat of arms. With their distinctive chhe-ow call, scarlet beak and legs, and acrobatic flight along clifftops bright with sea thrift, choughs are now successfully breeding in Cornwall once more — a wild and joyful return.
Catherine Hyde's painting captures the chough in its element: the windswept coast, the pink bloom of thrift, the particular light of a Cornish spring.
