The old carol carries something ancient in it that speaks of pre-Christian Midwinter rituals. This painting has the same liminal quality, like something half-remembered from a dream. It is a moment of threshold, as the deer run through the snow at sunrise, caught between the darkness of the night just passed and the pale gold of the winter sunrise.
The rising of the sun and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.
The original painting is acrylic on canvas with copper leaf, the warm metal catching the first light of the dawn.
