January dawn at Totleigh Barton, Devon. The geese are up, crossing the pale winter sky in formation, their calls carrying across the frozen fields. This is a photograph, not a painting, but it holds the same quality of attention: the world caught at its most elemental, wild creatures moving through a landscape that is ancient and unhurried and entirely itself.
There is something deeply stirring about geese in flight at dawn — the purposefulness of their movement, the sound of their wings, the sense of a journey being made that has nothing to do with us and everything to do with the turning of the year.
