Solstice morning. In the old stories, the witch returns to her human form at dawn, slipping back across the threshold before the light fully comes. The hare pauses at that exact moment: the year’s longest night just ended, the first pale light of the solstice morning breaking, the snow holding the last of the dark. She is the shapeshifter caught between one world and the next, neither fully hare nor fully woman, belonging entirely to the threshold.
This is a painting about that charged, magical instant — the solstice as the hinge of the year, the moment when everything turns, and the old wild magic is at its most present and most powerful.
The original painting is acrylic on canvas with gold leaf, built up through many layers of texture to create an ambiguous, glowing surface — neither quite solid nor quite light, as befits a painting about transformation.
