UNDER A BLANKET OF STARS print

Under a blanket of stars, the lovers rest — held within a world of night magic, pomegranate and hare, fertility and fairytale. The hare watches over them, ancient guardian of the moon and of all that grows and multiplies in the dark. The pomegranate, with its jewelled seeds, speaks of abundance, of the underworld and the upper world held in a single fruit, of love that is both earthly and mythic.

This painting has the quality of a dream or a story told by firelight — something that has always existed, somewhere, and that we are only now remembering.

This image was created as one of the illustrations for The Princess’ Blankets by Carol Ann Duffy — a book that went on to win the English Association Award for Best Illustrated Book (Key Stage 2). It is a story of love woven into the very fabric of the night sky, and this painting carries that magic into the home.
