The back bar of the Blue Anchor in Helston at Christmas — fire lit, friends gathered, stories being told, and Cornish songs beginning. This is one of Cornwall’s oldest pubs, a place that has been a meeting point for centuries, and the back bar holds that history in its walls: the warmth of accumulated evenings, the particular cosiness of a room that knows how to keep the winter out.
William the cat, who adopted the pub as his own, keeps watch from his portrait on the wall — the presiding spirit of the place.
The original painting is acrylic on canvas with copper leaf, the firelight caught in the gilded surface, warm and flickering.
