Mistletoe — the golden bough, the plant that grows between worlds. Rooted in neither earth nor sky, it clings to the branches of its host tree, evergreen through the winter, its pale berries luminous in the cold light. To the Celts, it was the most sacred of plants, cut by the Druids with a golden sickle at the winter solstice, a symbol of life persisting through the dark, of the mystical connection between the earthly and the divine.
This painting is December’s plant from The Hare and The Moon — and mistletoe is the perfect choice for the midwinter month, carrying its ancient magic into the heart of the Christmas season, a reminder of how deeply rooted this time of year is.
