One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy — the old magpie counting rhyme is one of the most deeply embedded in the English tradition, a charm against ill fortune and a way of reading the world through the birds that cross our path. This painting is the fourth in a series of seven, each one a verse of the rhyme, each one its own tree.
Four magpies in the oak — the ancient tree of strength and endurance. Four for a boy: a blessing, a promise, a piece of old magic spoken quietly into the air.
The series can be collected individually or as a set, each print is a complete image in its own right and part of a larger whole.
