This painting is from Darkling: The Owl’s Song by Catherine Hyde — shortlisted for the Holyer an Gof Poetry Award 2025, published by Apollo, an imprint of Bloomsbury.
‘Pairing stunning art with lyrical poetry, this ode to the owl is deeply compelling on multiple levels.’ — Barnes & Noble
‘Darkling is a magnificent praise song that honours both the darkness and the owl. Lyrical in both word and image, it is a wild triumph.’ — Jackie Morris
I turn
to the old orchard
where she hunts:
a ghost glimmering
sweet heart of the moon.
Swooping between trees,
a beating clock of claw and feather,
hush winged, in half light.
Prize-winning poet and artist Catherine Hyde celebrates the magic of the night from dusk till dawn, following the tawny owl’s journey through the darkling wood. As we sleep, the forest comes to life — the owl swoops, moths dance in the moonlight, fireflies mimic the stars, a stag grazes, badgers burrow, foxes prowl, ferns catch the dew.
