This painting is from The Princess’s Blankets by Carol Ann Duffy, winner of the English Association Best Illustrated Book Award, Key Stage 3. In this modern fairytale, a king seeks someone to cure his daughter of feeling cold. A magician arrives and claims he can succeed — he throws the forest’s blanket, the ocean’s blanket, the mountain’s blanket, and the earth’s blanket over her. She remains cold, and the world is left stark and empty by this terrible magic. It is only the music of a wandering musician that cures her.
