Hardy wrote his poem at the turn of the century, on a frost-hardened evening at the winter solstice, when the world seemed drained of hope. And yet the thrush sang — frail and gaunt against the darkening sky, flinging its soul upon the growing gloom. This painting holds that same tension: the mistletoe and berries bright against the cold, the bird's song rising into the silence, a small and defiant joy at the year's darkest turning.
The original painting is acrylic on panel with gold leaf, the gilded surface catching the light as the thrush's song catches the ear — unexpected, luminous, and full of grace.
