THE DARKLING THRUSH print

Hardy wrote his poem at the turn of the century, on a frost-hardened evening at the winter solstice, when the world seemed drained of hope. And yet the thrush sang — frail and gaunt against the darkening sky, flinging its soul upon the growing gloom.
